Finding The Best Online Therapist For Your Needs in Ontario BC
With the onset of the pandemic in 2020, I decided to venture into offering therapy to my clients online. A temporary plan to offer therapy to clients in need during the pandemic has now evolved into a fully online practice. I have discovered that the online platform can be a very effective alternative to in person therapy. My observations and the positive feedback I have received from clients has been supported by a considerable amount of research.
Is Online Therapy Effective?
Yes! Connecting with a therapist online has shown that it can be just as effective as in person therapy for a variety of mental health issues.
Literature studies have supported online cognitive behavioural therapy was just as effective for depression, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, trauma and gambling behaviours.
Research has also shown that the therapeutic alliance with a therapist is one of the most important aspects to successful therapy. A strong alliance of mutual respect, trust and collaboration can be developed virtually to work on the goals of an individual.
What Are Some Of The Advantages Of Online Therapy?
Convenience and Comfort
Your ability to access your therapy sessions online offers the ease of convenience. You can connect with your therapist from the comfort of your own home and do not have to worry about allowing extra time for travel. You can have your sessions with your therapist in an environment where you feel safe and secure. This is particularly helpful for people experiencing severe social anxiety and have difficulty finding their way to a therapist in person.
If you are away from your home, you also have the option of scheduling sessions with your therapist from anywhere and anyplace, which many of my Clients appreciate.
Privacy and Anonymity
My online platform (Jane) is very secure. By engaging in therapy from the privacy of your own space, you can be assured of complete discretion. Unfortunately, sometimes a sense of embarrassment or shame prevents individuals from seeking out help. For some people, the knowledge that the sessions are online can encourage them to seek out and continue with therapy.
Affordability and Accessibility
Online therapy does not incur added costs such as travel expenses, parking fees or child care. Online therapy is also easier to access as you only need to have a private space for your sessions and a computer or phone to connect. With less costs and fewer barriers, it is more likely that you will continue to engage in therapy for a longer period of time and get the help you need.
Personal Connection
Clients can feel just as connected with a therapist online as compared to meeting in person, if not more so. In my online practice, I have found that clients often seem less stressed in their home environment and are able to more freely share their concerns and feelings. During our sessions, the client and I are able to see and hear each other clearly including the myriad of facial expressions and body language cues that are essential to effective communication. The ability to have an open dialogue is an integral step in building a therapeutic connection between client and therapist.
It has been my experience that clients are more likely to seek out and continue to participate in therapy when they face fewer obstacles. Online therapy is an excellent option for those individuals seeking out a skilled and competent therapist to help them make changes that will lead to a more satisfying and well adjusted life.
